Google has started rolling out Gemini Spark, an agentic AI assistant, to its Gemini app for macOS. Unveiled at the Google I/O developer conference in May, the tool is positioned as an active partner designed to execute multi-step workflows and perform tangible tasks on behalf of the user.

The macOS integration specifically allows Spark to manage local files and automate processes on the desktop. According to Engadget, users can command the assistant to organize large quantities of PDFs in the Downloads folder into specific folders. Spark can also use local files to populate Google Workspace applications, such as generating a spreadsheet based on invoices saved on the user's laptop.

Currently, Gemini Spark for macOS is in beta testing. Access is restricted to users in the US who are 18 years of age or older and subscribe to Google AI Ultra for $100 a month.

Expanding Ecosystem and Third-Party Integration

The rollout includes new capabilities for the agent to interact with both first-party and external services. 9to5google reports that Spark now integrates with Google Keep and Tasks. This allows the assistant to scan notes in Keep and convert them into action items within Tasks. While these updates are arriving for web and mobile users first, macOS support is expected in the coming weeks.

Third-party application support is also expanding. Over the coming weeks, integration will be available for several services:

  • Dropbox: For accessing and sharing files.
  • Canva: To design custom flyers.
  • Instacart: For ordering weekly groceries.
  • OpenTable: To reserve tables for dining.
  • Zillow Rental: To reserve apartment tours.

Google is also introducing Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, which enables users to enter custom app links via the Gemini apps web page. Additionally, Google announced that Spark can now intelligently track topics and react to events in real time, according to 9to5google.

Remote Control and Device Management

While Spark natively operates in the cloud to manage tasks while devices are powered off, an APK teardown of the Google app for Android (v17.36.12) suggests a deeper link between mobile and desktop hardware. Android Authority discovered code strings pointing toward remote desktop control capabilities.

These findings indicate that users may soon be able to trigger tasks on their Mac from a phone. For instance, a user could ask Spark to locate a specific file on their laptop and email it to them while they are away from their desk. The teardown also revealed a potential device picker, which would allow power users to select between multiple connected computers, provided they are online and paired to the same account.

Further strings suggest users will be able to monitor the real-time status and availability of their Mac directly from a mobile screen. Google has addressed potential privacy concerns regarding this level of access, stating the assistant will only access files that the user explicitly grants permission to use.

Enterprise and Creative Applications

The "Spark" branding is also appearing in high-performance professional environments. McLaren Racing and Google Gemini have partnered for the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The partnership includes a heritage-inspired livery for the MCL40 under the campaign tagline Spark What’s Next.

This collaboration extends into technical racing operations. Mclaren uses Gemini Enterprise and Google Cloud to build a custom tool that allows trackside engineers to search and compare dense sporting regulations during races. The team is also developing a natural language interface to pull data from multiple siloed systems to analyze critical workflows, including lap-time metrics.

For creative and brand work, McLaren utilizes Gemini tools such as Omni and Nano Banana for concept development and ideation.
