A pilgrimage in northeastern Thailand turned into a scene of devastation on Thursday, 2 July 2026, when an 11-year-old boy driving his parents' pickup truck collided with a group of Buddhist monks. The incident, which occurred in Mukdahan province, claimed the lives of nine monks and left several others with critical injuries.

The procession, comprised of 35 monks and five lay followers, had been walking in a single line along the roadside as part of a journey toward Ubon Ratchathani province. The group had been on the road for approximately 30 minutes before the collision occurred. Security camera footage captured by the Ruam Jai Mukdahan Rescue Association shows the monks moving peacefully along the shoulder of the highway, with other traffic passing nearby, before the truck veered off the road and struck the group.

"I saw a boy driving a pickup truck, approaching. At that moment I was chanting 'Buddho, Buddho' (a meditation mantra). Then suddenly the truck hit at full speed and crashed us like this. Luckily another monk and I managed to jump out of the way in time. The first nine monks in line survived. But others who were hit were thrown into the air."

Emergency responders arrived to find the scene scattered with the monks' saffron robes and personal belongings. Initial reports from police and health authorities confirmed five monks died at the site, with four additional deaths reported later at a hospital. In addition to the fatalities, medical officials stated that at least three monks are in critical condition, while at least five others sustained serious injuries. Mukdahan Hospital has issued a public appeal for blood donations to assist those receiving care.

Local police confirmed the driver is an 11-year-old boy who had taken the vehicle from his home without permission. Major General Pairoj Thaiphutsa, commander of the Mukdahan Provincial Police, stated that investigators have been unable to question the child, who remains in a state of shock. He is currently under the care of a team that includes his guardians and a doctor.

The incident has drawn significant attention to Thailand’s road safety record. Mukdahan Governor Worayan Bunnarat addressed the tragedy, calling for greater vigilance regarding road safety and parental responsibility.

"We’ve been very strict on road safety in recent years. This case should be a lesson not just for our province, but for the public in general when it comes to preventing road accidents. I think everyone involved, especially parents, needs to help, because no one wants something like this to happen."

As of 2 July 2026, no formal charges have been filed. Police noted that under local law, children under the age of 12 do not carry criminal liability. The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination to determine the cause.

Buddhist monks hold a highly venerated status in Thai society, where they are central to local spiritual life and often participate in public processions.

Ongoing Status and Next Steps

  • Legal Inquiry: Police are awaiting the arrival of state child protection officers to assist with the questioning of the minor involved.
  • Forensic Review: The pickup truck is currently undergoing a detailed forensic examination to confirm the technical cause of the crash.
  • Medical Treatment: Mukdahan Hospital remains the primary site of care for the surviving monks, with blood donation efforts ongoing.
  • Parental Supervision: Investigators have requested interviews with the child's guardians to establish the chain of events that allowed the boy access to the vehicle.
