In a move that is set to impact gamers worldwide, Microsoft has announced that it will be raising the prices of its Xbox consoles globally from August 1. The price hike, which ranges from $100 to $150, is attributed to the surging costs of storage and memory chips driven by the booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

According to Microsoft, the cost of console storage and memory prices has increased by more than 2.5 times and is expected to double again by the fall of 2027. This significant rise in component costs has made it challenging for the company to maintain its current pricing strategy. As a result, the 512 GB Xbox consoles will cost $100 more, while the 1 TB models will see a price increase of $150. Additionally, Microsoft will be discontinuing its 2 TB Xbox console model.

The price hike is not unique to Microsoft, as other major players in the consumer electronics industry, including Apple and Sony, have also raised their prices in recent months. Apple, for instance, has increased the prices of its Mac computers and iPad tablet devices, citing the soaring cost of dynamic random-access memory chips and NAND storage chips. The company's MacBook Air laptop will now cost $1,299, up $200, while the flagship MacBook Pro will cost $1,999, an increase of $300.

Sony, on the other hand, raised the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in April, following a price revision in August last year. The increases underline the pressure facing console makers, which typically sell hardware on thin margins to build a larger base of users for games and subscription services.

The root cause of the price hikes can be attributed to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, which has led to a significant increase in demand for advanced memory chips. Chipmakers have been prioritizing products used in AI systems, tightening the supply of components required for consumer devices such as gaming consoles, laptops, and tablets. As a result, the cost of these components has more than quadrupled over the last year, and most experts project prices to continue increasing in 2027.

In an effort to soften the blow, Microsoft has highlighted various financing options for customers, including its Buy Now, Pay Later options through the Microsoft Store. The company is also working on creating new programs for customers to buy previously played consoles at lower prices. Players who are ready to upgrade or no longer use their console will be able to trade it in with participating retail partners for cash or store credit, and those consoles will then be made available at lower prices for other players.

What's Next?

As the demand for AI infrastructure continues to drive up the cost of memory chips, consumers can expect to pay significantly more for electronic devices in the coming months. The price hikes are a clear indication of the growing impact of the AI boom on the lives of everyday consumers, and it remains to be seen how the industry will adapt to these changes in the long term.
