NASA releases red, white and blue space images for America’s 250th birthday
NASA has unveiled a collection of space imagery and audio sonifications rendered in red, white, and blue to mark the United States' 250th anniversary. The project features four celestial objects captured by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and other space and ground-based telescopes.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, NASA has unveiled a collection of cosmic imagery rendered in patriotic shades of red, white, and blue. Released on June 30, 2026, the four images synthesize data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory with observations from other space-based and ground-based telescopes. The agency describes the project as a celebration of the wonders of the universe, accompanied by three new sonifications that translate astronomical data into audible sound.
The collection highlights four distinct celestial objects, each presented through a composite lens:
Media additions
- Cassiopeia A: A supernova remnant featuring a blast wave captured in X-ray and infrared data. Chandra observations in blue and purple reveal elements including iron, calcium, and oxygen, while James Webb Space Telescope data in red and white captures the expanding shell of material and cosmic dust.
- NGC 3603: A nebula in the Milky Way containing a cluster of young stars. Chandra data rendered in red and white highlights diffuse X-ray emission and point-like sources, layered with Hubble Space Telescope observations in red-orange, green, blue, and yellow to showcase the stellar cluster.
- Messier 94 (NGC 4736): A spiral galaxy featuring a bright inner starburst ring. This image blends multi-energy X-ray data from Chandra—displayed in red, orange, and blue—with visible light images from ground-based telescopes.
- ZwCl 0024+1652: A distant galaxy cluster. Chandra X-ray observations show a reservoir of superheated gas in red, while processed Hubble data in blue provides evidence of dark matter, and additional Hubble imagery highlights individual galaxies in yellow and white.
The associated sonification project, led by the Chandra X-ray Center as part of the Universe of Learning program, maps light brightness and spatial data to various sounds. In the NGC 3603 sonification, compact sources are heard as piano notes and diffuse emission as audio frequencies. The Messier 94 sonification uses wind-like sounds for X-rays and glass marimba tones for neutron stars and black holes. For the ZwCl 0024+1652 cluster, airy synthesizer notes represent the X-ray gas, while galaxies are rendered on a piano.
NASA's engagement with the nation’s 250th birthday extends to its active space missions. During the Artemis 2 lunar orbit mission in April 2026, crew members Victor Glover, Christina Koch, Reid Wiseman, and Jeremy Hansen wore flight suits featuring "America 250" patches. These emblems, which incorporate the "rocket’s red glare" motif from the national anthem, also appeared on the mission’s Space Launch System rocket boosters.
Ground-level festivities are prominent at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida and the National Mall in Washington, D.C. At the Great American State Fair, which runs through July 10, the NASA Pavilion features lunar base models, Orion crew survival suits, and the X-59 experimental aircraft model.
"As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, there is no better place to reflect on America’s achievements in exploration and innovation than here at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where history has been made for generations and the future of spaceflight continues to unfold, every day."

The Visitor Complex has scheduled a month-long series of events starting July 1, including a giveaway of 250 prizes for guests and the "All-American Block Party." Additional upcoming events include the STS-135 Legacy Commemoration, "Moon Fest 2026" honoring the Apollo 11 anniversary, and "American Aviation Weekend" in early August.
Upcoming Commemorative Schedule
| Event | Dates |
|---|---|
| Great American State Fair (Washington, D.C.) | June 25 – July 10 |
| All-American Block Party | July 3 – 5 |
| STS-135 Legacy Commemoration | July 10 – 12 |
| Moon Fest 2026 | July 17 – 19 |
