2026 World Cup bracket updates and Round of 32 qualification scenarios
The 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage is nearing its end as the tournament transitions from a 48-team field to a 32-team single-elimination knockout bracket.
As of Saturday, 27 June 2026, the FIFA World Cup is nearing the end of its group stage, with the tournament format moving from a 48-team field to a 32-team knockout bracket. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically, joined by the eight highest-ranked third-place finishers. The knockout phase officially commences on 28 June 2026.
The progression of teams has been defined by a mix of confirmed placements and tense final-matchday calculations. In Group A, Mexico secured their spot at the top of the table. South Africa emerged as the runner-up following a win over South Korea. Switzerland claimed the top spot in Group B after a victory against Canada, who finished in second place. Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite a win against Qatar, finished third in the group but secured a knockout berth as one of the best third-place teams. Qatar has been eliminated from the competition.
Group C concluded with Brazil as the group winners, followed by Morocco, both finishing with 7 points. Scotland and Haiti were eliminated from the group. The United States claimed the top position in Group D. Germany won Group E, while Ecuador secured their path to the knockout round with a win over Germany, positioning themselves as the top-performing third-place team. The Ivory Coast finished second in that group.
In Group F, the Netherlands finished in first place following a victory against Tunisia. Japan secured second place, setting up a Round of 32 match against Brazil. Sweden also qualified for the next stage as a third-place team following a draw with Japan. The final standings in Group G remain fluid; Egypt holds a position of control but has not yet guaranteed advancement, while Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand remain in contention for the remaining spots.
Group H competition continues with Spain currently leading. Cape Verde secured a historic draw against Uruguay, leaving the group standings to be decided by the final matches between Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, and Uruguay versus Spain. France successfully won Group I, with Norway finishing as the runner-up. France is set to face Sweden in the Round of 32, while Norway will play the Ivory Coast. Senegal, having defeated Iraq, remains in the hunt for a third-place qualification spot.
Argentina emerged as the winners of Group J following a victory over Austria. Algeria remains in contention for a spot depending on the outcome of their final match against Austria. In Group K, Colombia sits atop the table; their match against Portugal on the final day will determine the group winner. DR Congo remains in contention for a third-place qualification. In Group L, England and Ghana are level on points, with both teams facing their final group stage matches against Panama and Croatia, respectively.
The advancement of third-place teams is determined by a specific hierarchy of tiebreakers: total points, overall goal difference, total goals scored, head-to-head results, team conduct scores, and, if necessary, the FIFA Men’s World Ranking. Matches from the Round of 32 through the final on 19 July 2026 are single-elimination. If scores remain level after 90 minutes, games will proceed to 30 minutes of extra time, followed by a penalty shootout if required.
The tournament bracket will reach completion on 27 June 2026, when the final group-stage fixtures conclude. The knockout schedule leads to the semi-finals in Dallas and Atlanta on 14–15 July, followed by the third-place play-off in Miami on 18 July and the final at MetLife Stadium on 19 July.
