Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh vocalist whose distinctively raspy voice defined a generation of power ballads and brought dramatic, stadium-sized emotion to the global pop charts, has died. She was 75.

Tyler died unexpectedly on Wednesday night in a hospital in Portugal, where she was being treated for an illness. Her family confirmed the news in a statement on her official website and social media accounts on Thursday, asking for privacy as they deal with the tragedy. The singer had been hospitalized in Faro, Portugal, in May 2026 for emergency intestinal surgery. Following the operation, she was placed in a medically induced coma for several weeks. While she emerged from the coma in mid-June, her family noted at the time that she remained very unwell and continued to receive care in the intensive care unit.

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, she was raised in a modest household, the fourth of six children born to a coal miner and a homemaker. Her early musical inspiration came from watching the program Top of the Pops with her father and singing along to the records of artists like Tina Turner and Janis Joplin into her hairbrush. To avoid confusion with fellow Welsh singer Mary Hopkin, she initially adopted the stage name Sherene Davis, later switching to Bonnie Tyler after choosing from a list of names found in a newspaper.

Her breakthrough occurred in 1977 after she underwent surgery to remove nodules on her vocal cords. When she returned to the studio and attempted to sing again, she discovered her voice had acquired a gravelly, husky timbre. Though she initially feared for her career, the new sound became her trademark. Shortly after the procedure, she released It's a Heartache, which became a massive international success, reaching No. 3 in the United Kingdom and finding significant traction on the American charts.

Tyler’s commercial zenith arrived in the early 1980s when she sought out songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. Impressed by his work with Meat Loaf, she collaborated with him to create what would become her signature song, Total Eclipse of the Heart. The power ballad, featured on her 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night, spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the U.K. Charts. The track, which Tyler later described as the song I had been waiting for all my life, became a permanent fixture in pop culture. It has amassed over 1 billion streams, with popularity spikes frequently occurring during solar and lunar eclipses, including events in 2017 and 2024.

Her partnership with Steinman also produced the 1984 anthem Holding Out for a Hero, which was recorded for the Footloose soundtrack. The song went on to feature in numerous films, television shows, and other media projects. Over a career spanning five decades, Tyler released 18 studio albums, with her final release arriving in 2021 titled The Best Is Yet to Come.

Beyond her studio work, Tyler was a frequent performer on the global stage. She represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest held in Sweden, where she performed Believe in Me and placed 19th. Throughout her career, she received three Grammy Award nominations. In 2022, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to music.

Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, a property developer and former Olympic judo competitor. The couple married in 1973.
