Michigan air quality slowly improves despite lingering wildfire smoke

Residents across Michigan are witnessing a gradual, albeit slow, improvement in air quality on Monday, July 20. While conditions have begun to shift away from the hazardous levels experienced late last week, wildfire smoke originating from Canada and Minnesota continues to linger, impacting the state’s atmosphere.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) confirmed the trend of decreasing smoke concentrations. Despite this progress, the state remains under an Air Quality Alert that was initially established for Sunday, July 19, and Monday, July 20. The alert was triggered by elevated levels of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5. These particles, which measure less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, are of significant concern to health experts because their small size allows them to bypass respiratory defenses, travel deep into the lungs, and occasionally enter the bloodstream.

Regional air quality variations

Air quality across the state remains uneven due to complex meteorological factors, including the positioning of the jet stream, lake-effect winds, and the specific trajectory of incoming smoke plumes. As of 8 a.m. Monday, reported conditions at key locations highlighted these disparities:

• Detroit: Recorded an AQI of 86. Projections suggest the area may transition into the unhealthy for sensitive groups category later in the day. Similar conditions are expected in Oakland and Macomb counties Monday.
• Grand Rapids: The AQI is 170, classified as unhealthy, as of 8 a.m. Monday.
• Marquette: The AQI is classified as unhealthy at 200 as of 8 a.m. Monday. It is forecast to improve to unhealthy for sensitive groups on Monday.
• Traverse City: The air quality is classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups at 146 as of 8 a.m. Monday. It is projected to stay in that category or downgrade to unhealthy for most of the day.

According to federal and state monitoring, Michigan occupies a predictable path for smoke traveling from the boreal forests of Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba. When upper-level winds align, smoke from a fire occurring hundreds of miles away can alter local skies within 36 hours. The state’s geography often places it in the direct path of smoke originating from Canada, a phenomenon that experts note is becoming a recurring feature of the summer season, often occurring alongside heat and humidity.

The persistent haze is driven by a massive scale of ongoing fire activity in Canada. As of Monday morning, the Canadian national wildland fire summary reported 940 active wildfires, with 104 of those classified as out of control.

EGLE and health officials advise residents to prioritize safety while air quality remains compromised. Key recommendations include:

• Indoor management: Stay indoors and, if possible, run HVAC fans continuously on the ON setting rather than auto to ensure consistent air filtration. A MERV 13 filter is recommended as the minimum standard for capturing wildfire-related PM2.5.
• Designated clean rooms: Families are encouraged to designate a specific room, such as a bedroom with an attached bathroom, as a clean zone. Utilizing a portable HEPA-rated air purifier in this space can provide relief for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions.
• Outdoor precautions: If outdoor travel is unavoidable, experts recommend wearing a tightly fitted N95 mask or P100 respirator. Outdoor activities should be limited and kept to short, less strenuous movements.
• Vehicle usage: Drivers should keep windows and outside air vents closed, operating their vehicle’s air conditioning on the recirculate mode.
