Filmmaker Shakeel Noorani arrested for alleged rape and blackmail in Mumbai

Shakeel Noorani is known in the Hindi film industry for directing and producing titles such as Joru Ka Ghulam and Bade Dilwala. He now faces charges under Sections 64, 123, 88 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following his arrest by Mumbai Police on Saturday.

The 73-year-old filmmaker was apprehended after a weeks-long manhunt that ended at his farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar, more than 200 km from Mumbai. He is accused of a four-year cycle of rape, intimidation, and poisoning targeting a 33-year-old aspiring actor.

The complainant alleges that the abuse began after she first met Noorani at an award function in 2016. According to Filmibeat, the director instructed her to contact him regarding an upcoming project, which eventually led to a meeting at his residence in the Malvani area of Mumbai for a script-reading session.

The actor claims that during this meeting, Noorani spiked her drink, causing her to lose consciousness. She alleges she was sexually assaulted while unconscious and, upon waking, was shown an intimate video of the encounter recorded on Noorani's phone. According to reports from Mathrubhumi and Outlook India, the filmmaker used this recording to threaten to leak the clip to her family or the police if she sought help.

This recording allegedly served as the mechanism for long-term coercion. The complainant states that the video was used to intimidate her into repeated sexual assaults over a period of four years. She further alleges that Noorani forced her to take contraceptive pills after their encounters and later poisoned her, an act she claims resulted in a miscarriage.

The legal process began approximately 40 days before the arrest when the woman filed her First Information Report (FIR). Following the registration of the case, Noorani reportedly went into hiding.

Mumbai Police conducted a wide search for the director, including a raid on his son's residence in Lokhandwala, Andheri. He was eventually traced to a farmhouse in Medha, Satara District, using technical inputs. After his arrest on Saturday, he underwent a medical examination at the Rural Hospital in Medha before being transported back to Mumbai.

Noorani was produced before the Borivali Holiday Court, which has remanded him to police custody. His legal representative, Advocate Vikas Singh Goar, has denied all allegations, stating that his client has been wrongly implicated.
