Federal investigators have concluded that three prominent ransom communications connected to the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie are fraudulent. This determination, disclosed by sources to Reuters on 30 June, impacts the primary theory that her abduction was motivated by a financial ransom demand. Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in the Tucson area on 31 January after spending the evening with her older daughter, Annie Guthrie, and her son-in-law.

The investigation has been marked by a series of disturbing communications sent to media outlets. The first two notes surfaced in early February. The initial message demanded a cryptocurrency payment, with deadlines set for 5 February and 9 February. A second note, which emerged around the same time, claimed that Nancy Guthrie had died. A third communication, sent to TMZ, claimed that the sender possessed a phone containing incriminating videos, photos, names, and addresses of the suspects, as well as footage of the victim on what the sender characterized as her final day.

According to federal sources, investigators tested the authenticity of the first two notes by depositing a small amount of cryptocurrency into the provided account. The funds remained untouched, leading the FBI to conclude the sender lacked any actual connection to the kidnapping. While the bureau has not publicly detailed the specific methods used to debunk the third note, it has officially classified all three as hoaxes.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which remains the lead agency in the case, has referred questions regarding the notes to federal authorities. Sheriff Chris Nanos, who commented on local radio prior to the federal confirmation, expressed public skepticism toward the communications. He described the emergence of fake ransom notes as a recurring problem that disrupts local communities and burdens families already in distress. Sheriff Nanos also noted that the FBI has conducted arrests in other unrelated cases involving fabricated ransom demands.

The impact of these events on the victim’s family has been significant. Savannah Guthrie has frequently shared emotional pleas for information. During these public appeals, she often referenced the ransom demands, at times expressing a willingness to comply if it meant securing her mother's return. In one instance, she addressed the unknown captors directly, stating,

"We cannot be at peace."

Despite the dismissal of these specific notes, the FBI’s Phoenix office issued a formal statement on 1 July emphasizing that the underlying case is still being investigated as a kidnapping for ransom. The bureau clarified that while some communications were deemed illegitimate extortion attempts, others may still be considered for investigation.

Physical evidence at the scene has provided investigators with few definitive leads. Authorities previously confirmed that DNA testing showed blood found on Nancy Guthrie's front porch belonged to her and obtained surveillance footage of a masked individual tampering with a doorbell camera shortly before the disappearance. Additionally, a glove found near the home was analyzed, but it did not yield a match against national genetic databases. Forensic analysis of DNA and other collected video evidence remains an ongoing part of the active investigation.

The family, alongside the FBI, maintains an open reward of over $1 million for information leading to answers. The FBI continues to urge anyone with credible intelligence to contact them directly at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Ongoing Investigation

As of early July, the search for Nancy Guthrie continues. Future updates are expected to focus on:

  • Continued forensic analysis of DNA and surveillance video recovered from the site of the disappearance.
  • New developments from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department as they coordinate with federal task force partners.
  • The potential for new evidence or credible tips to surface, as the public reward remains in effect.
