Israeli strikes in Kfar Rumman kill 12 people including two children

Children's schoolbooks lay strewn among chunks of concrete in the town of Kfar Rumman on Monday morning, where rescue workers used heavy machinery to pull bodies from the rubble of a destroyed residential building. Among those searching the debris was the family of eight-year-old Mustafa Farhat, who survived the strike but lost his mother and grandparents.

The pre-dawn attack destroyed a three-storey residential building in the village located in the Nabatieh district, killing 11 people in a single building, including two children and four women, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. A separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in the same town killed one medic and wounded two others.

Disputed Targets and Human Cost

The Israel Defense Forces stated that the raids targeted infrastructure sites tied to Hezbollah as well as several operatives seen transferring weapons in the Kfar Rumman area. The military stated that precise munitions and aerial surveillance were used to mitigate harm to uninvolved individuals.

However, residents and relatives described a different reality on the ground. A woman related to at least three of the dead said one attack hit a residential building as children were getting ready for school. Mona Farhat, a relative of the victims, told Reuters it was their home that was struck in the run-up to school time.

Kfar Roummane resident Fouad Chakaron remarked on the shifting nature of the violence, stating that residents had been living in constant anxiety amid shelling on the outskirts before strikes hit the heart of the town. Another local resident, Saleh Medlej, questioned the presence of military assets by asking whether there were missiles there, despite vowing to remain in the area. The psychological toll on families was underscored by Sara Moallaem, a 35-year-old mother of five, who described the heavy weight of fleeing repeatedly as night fell and violence escalated.

The Ali al-Taher Ridge Catalyst

The current wave of strikes is linked to a specific geographic flashpoint: the Ali al-Taher ridge. This strategic cluster of hills in southeastern Lebanon is believed by Israel to house a Hezbollah underground military complex. While Israel stated that it had cleared Hezbollah fighters out of the ridge, the military reported that Hezbollah launched two explosive drones overnight toward Israeli troops operating in that area near the designated security zone.

Following this incident, Israel ramped up strikes on towns to the north and west of the ridge. These areas had seen residents return after the June ceasefire, but they have now become targets of intensified bombardment. Lebanese security officials told Reuters they were anticipating continued escalations in the south in the coming weeks.

Erosion of the June Ceasefire

The violence comes despite a June framework deal mediated by the United States intended to halt fighting between the Israeli military and Hezbollah. This agreement called for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, the deployment of the Lebanese army across the south, and the disarmament of Hezbollah.

The deal has faced significant hurdles:

• Disarmament Disputes: Hezbollah has rejected any provisions linking the withdrawal of Israeli forces to its own disarmament, crossing what it terms all red lines. Parliamentary member Ali Ammar declared that the language of resistance is the only language effective against the Israeli enemy.
• Security Zone: Israeli troops occupying swathes of southern Lebanon continue to maintain a self-declared security zone where they have continued razing villages.
• Warning Patterns: Many strikes—including those in Kfar Rumman—have been carried out without online evacuation warnings from the Israeli military.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged international actors to pressure Israel to halt the ongoing offensive, warning that the dangerous escalation threatens the June framework deal. According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, Israeli strikes have killed more than 4,300 people since Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel on March 2, including over 250 children, nearly 400 women, and more than 130 medics. The ministry noted that its figures do not otherwise distinguish between civilians and militants, and Hezbollah has not issued a toll for its own fighters. Lebanese health authorities stated that the cumulative death toll serves as evidence of violations of international humanitarian law targeting medics and children.

The Israeli military's ongoing review of reports that uninvolved individuals were harmed remains active as operational units continue their sweeps across southern Lebanon.
