Australian mother gives birth to rare identical quadruplets in Brisbane

A Brisbane mother has become the center of a rare medical event after giving birth to identical quadruplets, a development clinicians believe is an Australian first. Jenitar Na’amoana, 34, welcomed her four daughters — Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa — via caesarean section at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on Tuesday, July 14. The infants were delivered at 28 weeks and four days gestation.

The birth is considered statistically extraordinary, occurring in approximately one in every 15 million pregnancies. While quadruplet births are generally rare, the Na’amoana case is distinguished by the fact that the babies are monozygotic, meaning they originated from a single fertilized egg that divided four times. Further complicating the medical circumstances is that all four infants shared a single placenta, a condition experts describe as unheard of in Australia.

Dr. Alexa Bendall, the maternal fetal medicine specialist who oversaw the pregnancy, noted that the situation presented significant risks, including potential growth restriction and unbalanced blood flow between the infants in the womb. Despite these dangers, Dr. Bendall stated that the family managed to dodge all of those complications throughout the pregnancy. "We have never seen a spontaneously conceived pregnancy of this type with quads, and she has somehow dodged every complication and risk for both herself and her babies to be here today, with four gorgeous newborn girls," Bendall said via The Guardian.

For the parents, Jenitar and Jortham Na’amoana, the arrival of the quadruplets was an unexpected expansion of their household. The couple was already raising four children, Denessa, 10; Karl, eight; Selina, three; and Clohi, one, when they conceived the quads naturally. Ms. Na’amoana was still breastfeeding her youngest child at the time she discovered she was pregnant. Following the July 14 delivery, the family’s brood has doubled from four to eight children, bringing the total household size to 10 people.

As of Monday, July 20, the fundraising effort had generated more than 39,000 AUD to assist with these needs.

The infants will remain in the hospital for several weeks while they gain strength. Ms. Na’amoana, who was discharged from the hospital three days after the procedure, is currently managing the demands of recovering from surgery while commuting to provide breast milk for her daughters and caring for her older children.
