The DOOM: The Dark Ages saga prepares for its next installment with the campaign expansion Revelations scheduled for launch on 7 July 2026. This expansion shifts the Slayer’s narrative and mechanical focus, moving away from the defensive-heavy gameplay of the core title toward a more mobile, aggressive combat style.

In this new chapter, the protagonist finds himself wounded and betrayed, trapped within a purgatory that forces him to confront unsettling truths about his own mind. According to official studio descriptions, the narrative arc involves the Slayer working with a mysterious ally to overcome an abomination of the gods, ultimately aiming to secure freedom for his followers. The expansion spans six levels, including a central hub area that operates with Metroidvania-style progression, allowing players to revisit previously locked sections as they acquire new abilities and gear.

Combat Evolution and the Chain Spear

Central to the expansion is the introduction of the Chain Spear, a weapon that functions as a primary tool for navigating engagements. Director Hugo Martin described the implement as a versatile system for aerial maneuverability, enabling players to grapple to ledges, levitate, or orbit enemies while attacking. While the familiar chainsaw shield remains available for use, it begins the expansion in a damaged state, requiring players to adapt to the spear's specific mobility-focused mechanics. Martin described the maneuverability of the spear-wielding Slayer as being like a monster truck with a jet engine strapped to the back.

The transition to the spear may feel jarring for those accustomed to the slower, tankier pace of the base game, according to reporting from Comicbook. However, id Software emphasizes that the weapon’s utility grows through a dedicated upgrade tree, with specific throw mechanics tailored to counter aerial foes and distinct glory kills for various enemy types.

A Shift in Scale and Content

The expansion targets a total playtime of 10 to 12 hours. The studio has divided this content into two distinct pillars:

  • Core Campaign: Represents approximately 60% of the total experience, focusing on the narrative journey through purgatory.
  • Endgame Content: Makes up the remaining 40%, featuring high-intensity combat spaces known as Master Arenas, Slayer Trials, and revisit-able classic maps.

The inclusion of classic levels — reimagined versions of maps from the early titles — serves a specific narrative purpose. Martin noted that these segments allow the team to explore the history of the character, specifically referencing his identity as the marine Flynn Taggart. These playable memories act as a celebration of the franchise’s 35-year history, bridging the gap between the original games and the modern trilogy.

Free Updates and Availability

Alongside the paid expansion, a free update, referred to in studio documentation as Ripatorium 3.0, will arrive for all owners of the base game on 7 July 2026. This update introduces improved passcode generation, deeper customization options, and personal preset configurations for the arena mode. Owners of the Revelations DLC receive additional benefits, including three exclusive maps, new demon variants, and upgraded weapon sets for use within the arena.

The expansion will be available for purchase as a standalone download for USD $19.99. Those who own the Premium Edition or the Collectors Bundle of the base game will receive access to the content at no additional cost. The release is scheduled for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

What to Watch Next

As the release date approaches, players should monitor how the community responds to the balance between the new spear-based combat and the legacy shield mechanics. While the expansion is designed to be a standalone experience, the studio suggests that players complete the base campaign first, noting that the expansion carries a higher base difficulty level. As development moves toward the launch on 7 July 2026, the industry continues to track how these new mechanics integrate with the series' existing, high-intensity gameplay standards.
