This shift toward biomass-based energy aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry by replacing traditional petroleum-based kerosene with renewable alternatives.
Converting Waste to Aviation Fuel
According to local media reports, these Swiss firms are focusing on the technical challenge of converting organic waste into high-performance fuel. The process involves utilizing biomass—organic materials derived from plants, animals, or waste products—to create a synthetic alternative to conventional jet fuel.
The technology targets two primary feedstocks: frying oil and alcohol. By repurposing these materials, the companies are developing fuels that can be blended with existing kerosene, allowing aircraft to operate with lower net carbon emissions without requiring entirely new engine architectures.
Targeting Long-Haul Decarbonization
The push for these green fuels is driven by the specific emissions profile of the aviation sector. Medium and long-haul flights generate the highest volume of emissions, and because these flights cannot easily be electrified, synthetic paraffinic kerosene (SPK) and other biofuels represent the most viable path toward decarbonization.
By focusing on waste-derived fuels, the development process avoids the pitfalls of using primary food crops, instead relying on fermentation and waste-processing techniques to create a sustainable energy cycle.
