The encounter took place in December 2007 as part of a charity calendar collaboration between the FC Barcelona Foundation, the Spanish outlet Diario Sport, and UNICEF. To raise funds for children's rights, the project paired Barcelona first-team players with local children selected via a raffle. Yamal's family, residing in Mataró, won the draw and were paired with Messi by chance. The calendar launched in 2008, with 50% of sales benefiting projects for children's rights.
