Sabaton brought their signature blend of military history and heavy metal to Plzeň, turning a Metalfest warm-up party into a full-scale theatrical event. Known for their historical themes and high-production stage shows, the Swedish band reinforced their reputation for spectacle by incorporating pyrotechnics and a literal tank into their performance.
Heavy Artillery on Stage
The event drew thousands of metal fans to the Lochotín area, where the atmosphere was defined by fire and heavy machinery. According to local media reports, the presence of a tank on stage served as a visual centerpiece, aligning with the band’s career-long focus on wartime narratives and military bravery.
A New Addition to the Zoo
The band’s visit to the city extended beyond the concert stage and into the local community. During their time in Plzeň, the members of Sabaton became godparents to a baby rhinoceros at the Plzeň zoo.

The naming process for the calf reflected the band’s military aesthetic, with “Tank” appearing as one of the initial suggestions. The band chose the name Karel for the animal. While the group expressed their support for the zoo and the newborn rhino, reports indicate they have no intention of taking the animal home with them.
Metalfest Integration
The performance served as a precursor to the larger Metalfest gathering. The event’s organization included detailed logistical planning for the festival grounds and surrounding areas to accommodate the influx of attendees drawn by the band’s high-energy appearance.
