The scale of tourism in Lima’s Miraflores district has reached a level that reportedly eclipses some of Peru’s most iconic historical landmarks, according to recent claims regarding visitor traffic.
Urban Appeal Over Ancient Ruins
Carlos Canales has highlighted a surprising shift in how visitors are engaging with the region, suggesting that the modern allure of Miraflores is drawing crowds that exceed those visiting the historic center of Lima or even the world-renowned Machu Picchu.
“There are more tourists in Miraflores than in Machu Picchu or the Center of Lima,” Canales stated, noting that the district sees as many as 700,000 visitors per day.
This figure underscores a pivot in cultural consumption, where the commercial, gastronomic, and coastal offerings of a modern urban hub are competing with—and potentially overshadowing—traditional heritage sites in terms of daily foot traffic.
