Steve Buscemi Joins Cast of Far Cry Television Series at FX and Hulu

The upcoming television adaptation of the Far Cry video game franchise has expanded its cast, with Steve Buscemi confirmed to join the FX and Hulu production. This casting announcement adds another high-profile name to the limited anthology series, which already includes Lizzy Caplan and series co-creator Rob Mac. The project remains in the early stages of development following the series order placed by FX in November 2025.

The series marks the first live-action television adaptation of the Ubisoft property. Rather than a direct recreation of existing titles, the show will utilize an anthology format, featuring a new setting and a fresh set of characters for each season. This structural approach mirrors the nature of the video game franchise, which has tallied over 100 million unique players since its introduction in 2004.

Noah Hawley described his vision for the project as a dialogue with the franchise.

"One thing that really attracted me to the 'Far Cry' franchise is that it is an anthology, and every time they release a new game, it is a totally different story. That's how I approach 'Fargo,' and it was an exciting idea that we could build an anthology game adaptation where each season is a different story about civilized people thrown into situations where they have to become increasingly uncivilized."

Hawley noted that adapting video games requires careful handling, specifically regarding the preservation of human drama. He argued that since video games rely on gameplay sections separated by cutscenes, a direct translation often renders human drama irrelevant. By choosing an anthology structure, the creative team aims to explore variations on a theme, focusing on the behavior of people placed in chaotic or extreme situations.

Production logistics are currently shielded from public view. Filming is anticipated to begin following the completion of work on season two of Alien: Earth. Hawley has indicated that scripts for the first season are roughly halfway complete, with plans for him to direct the opening two episodes.

The collaboration between Hawley and Mac represents a significant creative partnership at FX.

Mac also noted that Ubisoft has been remarkably generous in allowing the team to adapt the world they created. FX president Nick Grad expressed confidence in the team, citing their history of delivering ambitious television, including their previous collaborations on the Fargo anthology series.

Buscemi joins the project following a career that includes roles in Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski, and The Death of Stalin, as well as his notable appearance in season two of Netflix’s Wednesday. Although the specific nature of his role in Far Cry has not been disclosed, the industry anticipates he may occupy the type of "wild, wacky, and compelling" antagonist roles historically central to the game franchise.
