Actor Micheal Ward cleared of all rape and sexual assault charges
Top Boy actor Micheal Ward was acquitted of all charges after a two-week trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. He maintained his innocence throughout the process.
British actor Micheal Ward was acquitted of all charges at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London on Friday, 10 July 2026. A jury reached a unanimous verdict of not guilty on two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault after deliberating for five hours and 25 minutes.
The two-week trial centered on a series of allegations brought against the 28-year-old performer regarding an encounter that occurred on 2 January 2023. According to testimony presented in court, the actor and his accuser met at a nightclub in east London before relocating to an afterparty hosted by Ward in Gants Hill. Later that evening, both parties entered a vehicle, where the alleged offenses took place.

Ward, known for his roles in Top Boy and the film Blue Story, consistently denied the allegations throughout the proceedings. When asked about the nature of the encounter, Ward told the jury that the interaction was entirely mutual. Everything we did was wholly consensual and we were having a great time,
Ward stated in court. He testified that the woman was reciprocating the energy
and never indicated a desire to leave the situation.
The complainant, whose identity is protected by legal restrictions, provided a conflicting account. She testified that she felt numb
and scared
during the event, telling the jury that she completely shut down
and that she had told Ward she needed to leave on multiple occasions.
Her friends told the jury that after she returned to their car, she appeared to be very shaken up and ordered an STI test kit on their way home.
The prosecution, led by Tracy Ayling KC, argued that the actor was intent on pursuing sexual activity regardless of the woman's comfort levels. In contrast, the defense, led by Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, challenged the consistency of the complainant's testimony. Bennett-Jenkins pointed to discrepancies in the woman's statements to police and the late emergence of messages between the parties as evidence that the prosecution’s case lacked credibility.
The trial saw heightened security and procedural oversight. Judge Rosa Dean cleared the public gallery for portions of the proceedings and issued warnings regarding social media activity after an influencer, Murad Merali, was threatened with contempt of court for posting videos about the trial. The judge cited concerns that such content could unduly influence jurors.
Following the delivery of the verdict, Ward broke down in tears in the dock. His lawyer, Humzah Ilyas, released a statement outside the courthouse:
"Micheal is thankful this process has now reached a conclusion. He looks forward to getting back to doing the work he loves and focusing on the future. Victims of sexual assault deserve to be heard, treated with compassion, and have their allegations taken seriously."
The case has spanned over three years, with Ward first being formally charged by the Metropolitan Police on 25 July 2025. Following the initial accusation, the actor was dropped by his UK agency, though he maintained his innocence throughout the investigative process.
