Scottie Scheffler misses Scottish Open cut to end 78-event streak

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked male golfer, saw his streak of 78 consecutive made cuts conclude on Friday, 10 July 2026, at the Genesis Scottish Open. The departure from The Renaissance Club in North Berwick marks the first time the 30-year-old has failed to advance to the weekend in nearly four years, effectively ending a run that had lasted 1,428 days.

Scheffler entered the tournament having finished inside the top 25 in each of his previous 35 starts. His last result outside that bracket occurred at the 2024 BMW Championship, where he tied for 33rd. He carded a 2-under 68 in the first round, but a 2-over 72 in the second round left him at even-par 140. He finished two shots outside the projected cut line of 2-under 138.

The struggle on Friday began early. Scheffler started the day three shots off the lead and immediately bogeyed the par-4 11th and par-5 12th. On the 11th, he missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt. On the 12th, a chip from high grass to a back pin caught a ridge and rolled into a bunker. While he holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-5 first after the turn — his only birdie on a par 5 for the week — he dropped another shot on the par-3 17th.

His final opportunity to stay in the tournament vanished on the par-3 ninth. After a 7-iron shot fell short and a weak chip landed 6 feet from the hole, Scheffler missed the par putt. I felt like I needed at least a birdie coming in on my last few holes, Scheffler said via AP News. I know I had to make the putt on 8 and I had to make birdie, I felt, on 9.

Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler noted that his approach play hindered his ability to secure necessary birdie opportunities. For historical context, the PGA Tour record is held by Tiger Woods, who made 142 consecutive cuts between February 1998 and May 2005. Byron Nelson previously held a record of 113 consecutive cuts during an era where making the cut typically meant finishing in the top 20.

Scheffler noted that the modern PGA Tour schedule influences these numbers, as 25 tournaments in his streak were signature events that had no 36-hole cut. It’s a little different now with some of the signature events not having cuts, Scheffler told Golfweek. But I don’t think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.

Consecutive Cut Streak Comparison

Scheffler attributed some of his difficulty to The Renaissance Club, where he has only two top-10 finishes in five appearances, including a T-3 in 2023 and T-8 in 2025. It could be one of those things where you just get over jet lag, get used to new style of golf, new types of grasses, and maybe I just haven’t adjusted as quick, or maybe this golf course just doesn’t suit my eye much, he told reporters. On Thursday, July 9, Scheffler had also spoken candidly about turning 30 and his receding hairline, jokingly suggesting he might blame it on the jet lag.

The early exit alters Scheffler’s schedule for the coming days. As the defending champion of The Open Championship, he will now head to Royal Birkdale earlier than planned. Despite the result in Scotland, Scheffler remains the world No. 1. In 14 events during the 2026 season, he has recorded one win at The American Express, four runner-up finishes, including a playoff loss to Viktor Hovland at the Travelers Championship and another to Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage, and three third-place finishes.
