3-time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane returns to Blackhawks on 2-year contract

Patrick Kane is returning to the Chicago Blackhawks. The 37-year-old right wing, a fixture of the franchise’s championship era, signed a two-year, $16 million contract on Thursday. The deal includes a full no-movement clause and carries an average annual value of $8 million. The move marks a homecoming for the future Hall of Famer, who spent his first 16 seasons in Chicago before his departure at the 2023 trade deadline.

The signing represents a significant shift in strategy for general manager Kyle Davidson.

Kane’s return comes during a period of transition for the Blackhawks. The team is currently navigating the absence of star center Connor Bedard, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder on July 8, following an injury sustained in his hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia. Bedard is expected to return to the lineup in early November. The addition of Kane provides the team with an elite offensive threat to bolster the roster in Bedard’s absence, with the organization hopeful the two may skate together once the young star is cleared to play.

Bedard had publicly welcomed the prospect of playing alongside the veteran.

"I can’t imagine his first game back at the (United Center), the reaction he’d get and how much juice that would bring to not only our team but our fans, as well. That would be incredible to get to play with him and learn from him. Hopefully he decides to come back. You talk about the legacy aspect of it, but as a team, it would make us a way better team. He’s still an amazing player."

Jonathan Toews, the former Blackhawks captain who retired last month following a final season with the Winnipeg Jets, also offered his support for the reunion.

"Awesome news, pretty cool to see him get the chance to go back. The team is heading in the right direction and he’ll bring such good experience and leadership for the young guys in that room. We were texting and as happy as I am for him, I told him I’m straight-up jealous that he’s gonna get to play for the Hawks again."

The reunion follows a three-season stint for Kane outside of Chicago, including his recent time with the Detroit Red Wings. While Kane’s move to Chicago was considered alongside interest from the Buffalo Sabres, he ultimately chose to return to his former home.

Kane remains a significant figure in franchise history, ranking third in games played (1,161), third in goals (446), second in assists (779), and second in points (1,225) for the Blackhawks. Beyond his tenure in Chicago, the league's highest-scoring American-born player has accumulated 1,400 points in 1,369 regular-season games. The team looks to integrate his veteran presence with a young core that includes players such as Alex Vlasic, Teuvo Teräväinen, and Arvid Söderblom.
