Mykhailo Mudryk cleared to return to Chelsea after doping ban resolution

Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to return to professional football with immediate effect after accepting that he committed anti-doping rule violations, despite the English FA confirming that the same test result would be legal under current scientific standards.

The 25-year-old Ukraine international reached an agreement on July 31, 2026, with the FA and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to resolve appeal proceedings at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). As part of the compromise, Mudryk accepted the charges and agreed to a period of ineligibility equal to the time he has already served, effectively canceling a four-year ban that would have sidelined him until approximately December 2028.

The resolution hinges on a scientific contradiction. Mudryk tested positive for meldonium, a prohibited cardiovascular medication used to increase stamina and respiratory capacity, during an out-of-competition test while on international duty in October 2024. While the FA maintained that Mudryk broke the rules at the time, they acknowledged that advances in reporting standards have changed the threshold for what constitutes a violation.

Chelsea described this technical shift as an important part of the context that allows all parties to move forward. The club, which signed Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal valued between £58.7m and £88m depending on the report, continues to hold the winger under a contract that extends to 2031.

Mudryk has not played a competitive match since November 2024, when he appeared in the 2024-25 Conference League, scoring in a 2-0 victory over Heidenheim. During his suspension, he was banned from Chelsea's Cobham training ground, forced to maintain his fitness with personal trainers, and was recently spotted working in a London charity shop.

Mudryk maintains he never knowingly took the banned substance, suggesting his sample may have been contaminated during Ukraine's matches in Albania and Georgia in November 2024. He described the ordeal as the most difficult period of his career.

The financial stakes for Chelsea are tied to the length of Mudryk's contract. According to The Whistler, the deal extending to 2031 was designed to amortize the cost of his transfer, spreading the expenditure across more years to reduce the annual impact on the club's business accounts.

Mudryk enters a squad led by Xabi Alonso. His prior record at Chelsea includes 10 goals and 11 assists in 73 appearances across all competitions, with five goals and six assists coming in 53 Premier League matches.

To bridge the gap back to elite competition, Chelsea is considering the option of sending Mudryk on loan. However, the player is expected to join the club's current pre-season tour to begin his return to the fold.

The immediate test of Mudryk's readiness and Alonso's trust will be whether the winger is included in the squad for the Premier League opening match against Fulham on August 24.

The path to Mudryk's reinstatement follows a sequence of disciplinary actions and legal challenges beginning in late 2024. Following the positive test in October 2024, the FA provisionally suspended the winger in November. According to The Whistler, Mudryk was formally charged by the FA in June 2025 and issued a four-year suspension in January, a development that became public in April when the player appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The final agreement on July 31, 2026, was reached under Article 10.8.2 of the World Anti-Doping Code and Regulation 90 of the 2024 Anti-Doping Regulations. This resolution required Mudryk to concede that he committed the charged anti-doping rule violations in exchange for a period of ineligibility capped at the time he had already served.

The resolution allows the 25-year-old to transition from his period of isolation, during which he was barred from the Cobham training ground, back into a professional environment. In a statement reported by Metro, Mudryk thanked his legal team for their tireless work and expressed gratitude toward his family, friends, and teammates for their support during the ordeal.

While the FA's anti-doping program is typically strictly confidential, the governing body provided specific details regarding the nature of the violation. The test revealed a low concentration of meldonium. Under the updated WADA Technical Document (TD2027MRL), such a concentration would no longer trigger a violation, a fact the FA used to help resolve the proceedings.

Chelsea's current priority is the winger's reintegration and physical conditioning. The club stated that they are focused on helping Mudryk return to full fitness and get back onto the pitch.
