Ben Shelton beats Frances Tiafoe to reach US Open final against Alexander Zverev

The first all-Black men's semifinal in US Open history concluded Friday night in a cultural milestone that saw Ben Shelton defeat Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. Yet, for the No. 8 seed, the celebration is shadowed by a punishing statistical reality: to secure his first Grand Slam title on Sunday, Shelton must overcome world No. 1 Alexander Zverev, a player who has won all five of their career meetings without dropping a single set.

Shelton now carries the burden of a 23-year void in American men's tennis, as no U.S. Man has won a major since Andy Roddick's 2003 US Open victory. Beyond the national drought, the 23-year-old is vying to become the first Black man to win the US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1968.

Shelton enters the final following an upset over Carlos Alcaraz, but he faces a daunting psychological and tactical mountain in Alexander Zverev. The German top seed reached the final by defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(6), capping a season in which he has reached three major finals and won the French Open.

For Zverev, the final is an opportunity to solidify a historic season. He is only the 12th man since 1978 to reach Grand Slam finals on three different surfaces in a single year. The final serves as a test of whether Shelton's recent form, characterized by reduced errors and improved baseline patience, can dismantle Zverev's dominance.
