Angels trade Logan O’Hoppe, Chase Silseth to Rangers for infield prospect

The Los Angeles Angels struck a deal with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, sending catcher Logan O’Hoppe and relief pitcher Chase Silseth to their American League West rivals in exchange for minor-league infielder Angel Arredondo. The transaction was finalized just ahead of the series finale against the Houston Astros. According to Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak, the trade marks the beginning of an extensive roster shake-up for an Angels squad holding an American League-worst record.

Reporting on the initial deal came from Jeff Passan of ESPN, while Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic provided details regarding the return package. The two outgoing Angels players had experienced contrasting trajectories. Chase Silseth, aged 26, was enjoying the finest campaign of his career. After previously splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen, the right-hander established himself as a high-leverage reliever with a 2.72 ERA. Yardbarker noted that Silseth posted a 3.42 FIP, recorded 48 strikeouts across 39.2 innings, and compiled a 1.1 bWAR, though he occasionally battled control issues with 5.0 walks per nine innings. Crucially for Texas, Silseth remained under club control for at least four more seasons.

Logan O’Hoppe, also 26, arrived via trade in 2022 as a top-100 prospect and initially flashed significant power, hitting 53 home runs combined across the 2023 through 2025 seasons. However, his performance dipped sharply since mid-2024. During the current season, O’Hoppe batted .209 with a .565 OPS (.566 according to Yardbarker) over 75 games, striking out in 25% of his plate appearances. Over his final 22 games with Anaheim, those struggles worsened to a .129 average and a .293 OPS, accompanied by defensive lapses in framing and blocking alongside -12 defensive runs saved.

Mozeliak emphasized that a fresh start was necessary.

"I thought in his case, the best thing for him would be a change of scenery. Obviously when you think about catchers, you sort of focus on two things: the ability to catch, throw, call a game from the defensive standpoint, and then the opposite side of that would be the offensive skill set. And I think he was really struggling putting a lot of pressure on both sides of the ball. That’s just really tough to balance."

Despite his struggles, O’Hoppe retains two more years of control.

Heading to Anaheim is Angel Arredondo, a 19-year-old infielder who signed with Texas as an international free agent out of Mexico in 2024. While Arredondo was omitted from top-30 lists by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, Mozeliak values him highly.

"In our system, he’s probably in the top 10 prospects. I know he wasn’t getting a lot of third-party recognition in this process, but I do think he’s a better player than he’s getting recognized for."

The Texas Rangers addressed immediate roster needs with the acquisition. With catchers Danny Jansen sidelined by a right forearm strain and Kyle Higashioka recovering from a right flexor tendon strain—both landing on the 60-day IL alongside rookie reliever Jose Corniell to clear 40-man roster space—Texas paired O'Hoppe with Elias Diaz and Austin Wynns. Surprisingly, the Rangers optioned O'Hoppe to Triple-A Round Rock upon his arrival.

Meanwhile, the Angels moved quickly to restructure their own roster. The Angels immediately replaced O’Hoppe on the roster with veteran Travis d’Arnaud, who has been out for more than two months with plantar fasciitis. Mozeliak acknowledged that they might have to go outside the organization to acquire a young catcher to replace O’Hoppe, noting that d’Arnaud is 37 and Tyler Heineman is 35. The Angels did not immediately replace Silseth on the roster, leaving them one player short in the bullpen for their Wednesday night game.

With the first move in the books, the focus now shifts to what else the franchise will do before the trade deadline. In the past, the Angels were unlikely to deal away players who remained under control for subsequent seasons, but they are now listening on just about all of their players. Attention centers most notably on pitchers Reid Detmers and José Soriano and shortstop Zach Neto.
