A prominent Olympic medalist has been sidelined from competition following a series of violations of anti-doping regulations.
Tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui, a gold medalist at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, has been handed a 21-month suspension. The sanction was announced by the anti-doping organization of the International Swimming Federation.
Whereabouts Violations Lead to Ban
The suspension does not stem from a failed drug test, but rather from administrative failures regarding the athlete’s location tracking. According to the governing body, Hafnaoui failed to report his whereabouts on three separate occasions within a 12-month period.

The penalty was applied retroactively, starting from April 11, 2024. Based on the ruling, Hafnaoui is eligible to return to competitive swimming on January 10, 2026.
The anti-doping organization confirmed that Hafnaoui has acknowledged the violations and accepted the resulting sanction.
A Career of High Peaks and Recent Absence
Hafnaoui rose to international stardom with a surprise victory in the 400-meter freestyle at the Tokyo 2021 Games. He continued his dominance in the pool into 2023, securing two World Championship gold medals in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle events.
Despite his pedigree, the swimmer was absent from the Olympic stage in Paris last year, having withdrawn from the competition.
