German baby food manufacturer HiPP is facing a criminal extortion attempt after unidentified perpetrators threatened to contaminate its products with rat poison unless demands were met, according to multiple German and Austrian news outlets.

The threats specifically targeted HiPP’s organic baby food pouches sold in Germany and Austria, with claims that rat poison had been introduced into certain batches. Austrian authorities confirmed they are investigating the allegations as a case of attempted extortion and product tampering, citing “serious suspicion” in connection with HiPP products.

In response, HiPP initiated voluntary recalls of specific product lines in both countries as a precautionary measure, even though no confirmed contamination has been reported in any tested samples to date. The company emphasized that consumer safety remains its top priority and that This proves cooperating fully with law enforcement.

Food safety regulators in Austria and Germany have urged parents to check batch numbers on HiPP products and return any affected items to retailers for refunds. No illnesses linked to the alleged tampering have been reported.

The incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in global food supply chains, where malicious actors may exploit public trust in infant nutrition products to exert pressure on manufacturers. HiPP has not disclosed the nature of the demands made by the extortionists.
