Anthony Hopkins to release debut classical album Life is a Dream

Sir Anthony Hopkins, the 88-year-old actor known for his acclaimed performances in film, is transitioning from the cinema screen to the concert hall. On 21 August 2026, he will release his debut classical album, Life is a Dream, through Decca Classics. The collection serves as a retrospective of his creative life, featuring orchestral compositions he has crafted over the past six decades.

The project, which Hopkins describes as the fulfillment of his "first desire" and "first wish," represents a lifelong commitment to music. Born in Port Talbot, Wales, Hopkins began playing the piano at the age of 4. By the time he was a teenager in the 1950s, he had begun composing music for local theater productions. He later graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 1957 before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

To record the album, Hopkins collaborated with Grammy Award-winning conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Sessions were held in April 2026 at London’s Alexandra Palace. The recording also features contributions from pianist Sergio Tiempo, cellist Gregorio Nieto, the Bach Choir, and the Boy Choristers of Winchester Cathedral. Decca Classics president Laura Monks, who witnessed the recording sessions, noted that the actor's technical knowledge and attention to detail were evident as he provided notes to the performers.

The album’s first single, "Bracken Road," was released on 10 July 2026. The track originates from a larger work, 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra, which Hopkins composed in 1963 while working at the Liverpool Playhouse. The piece is described as a nostalgic portrait of the meadows, mountains, farmland, and streets that surrounded his childhood home in Margam, South Wales.

The tracklist is presented as a biographical map of the composer's life. "My Fatherland" serves as a tribute to his heritage, with Hopkins noting that he wrote the piece to honour my humble beginnings as the son of my father, the baker. Other tracks, such as "Stella Aria" and "Tara," draw upon memories of family members, childhood visits with his grandfather, and his early experiences with cinema.

While this album marks his first under a major label contract, it is not his first recognition as a composer. In 2012, he won a Classic Brit Award for album of the year for the composition "And the Waltz Goes On," which was recorded by violinist André Rieu. Proceeds from the sales of the CD and vinyl editions of Life is a Dream will be donated to the United Nations Development Fund to support humanitarian efforts in Venezuela.

The project arrives alongside a long career in acting, including roles in The Silence of the Lambs, The Father, and Nixon. The actor continues to reflect on the nature of his creative path, describing his signing with Decca Classics as the honour of a lifetime.
