The 2025 Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup in Santiago has been thrown into disarray just days before its conclusion, following a controversial decision to prioritize a music festival over the tournament’s gold medal match. The host nation’s squad, known as Las Diablas Junior, has reacted with fury after the final was abruptly rescheduled to accommodate a heavy metal concert.
Originally set to be the showcase event of the tournament at the Parque Estadio Nacional, the final has been stripped of its prime-time slot. The collision course began when organizers of Loserville 2025, a heavy rock festival, relocated their event from the Estadio Monumental to the National Stadium complex, placing it directly adjacent to the hockey pitches.
“Total Indignation” from the Host Team
The logistical clash has forced tournament officials to move the final, originally scheduled for Saturday the 13th at 20:15, to the morning slot of 11:15 AM. The bronze medal match has suffered an even more drastic shift, now set for a 09:00 AM pushback. The decision has sparked outrage within the Chilean locker room, led by captain Florencia Barrios, who issued a stinging rebuke of the stadium administration.
Barrios described the situation as unheard of
and criticized the lack of foresight in placing a loud music festival next to a World Cup final. In a statement representing the squad, the captain expressed deep frustration regarding the respect shown to the athletes and the sport.
Unheard of! Our World Cup final cannot be played at the National… The stadium administration authorized a last-minute change and moved this event [concert] right next to our pitches. The final deserves respect because it is the face of Chile.
Florencia Barrios, Chile Captain
The players emphasized that this decision jeopardizes the integrity of the competition, questioning how a high-stakes tactical match can proceed next to a rock festival.
Broadcast and Sound Concerns
Beyond the inconvenience of playing in the morning, the technical implications of the venue clash are severe. Barrios highlighted the potential interference with the global broadcast and the physical environment for the players.
How do they expect us to play? Have they measured the decibels? What happens to the TV broadcast going to more than 100 countries?
Florencia Barrios
The scheduling conflict is seen by the team not just as an insult to the current tournament, but a long-term risk to the country’s reputation as a sporting host. This drama discredits us internationally, making it difficult for us to be awarded other events,
Barrios warned.
The Chilean team shared their official statement regarding the scheduling controversy via social media:
Revised Schedule
Due to the administration’s decision to authorize the late venue change for Loserville 2025, the final day of the World Cup on Saturday the 13th will now follow an unusually early timeline:
- 09:00 AM: Third Place Play-off
- 11:15 AM: World Cup Final
