Joan Templeman, the longtime partner and wife of Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, has died at the age of 80. Branson announced the loss on Tuesday, sharing a heartfelt tribute to the woman he described as the grounding force behind his life and career for half a century.

While the announcement did not specify a cause of death, the family shared their grief publicly, highlighting Templeman’s pivotal role as a matriarch and partner.

In a statement released on social media, Branson expressed his profound sorrow regarding the passing of his spouse.

I am devastated to report that Joan, my wife and partner of 50 years, has died.

A Partnership of Five Decades

The couple’s relationship began in 1976, meeting at The Manor recording studio in Oxfordshire, England. In a blog post reflecting on their history, Branson described their initial courtship, noting that Templeman, whom he characterized as a practical Scot, was largely unimpressed by his typical antics.

Branson recalled spending time visiting Templeman at the antique shop where she worked, which specialized in vintage signage. He described how he would hesitate outside before building up the courage to enter, eventually amassing a large collection of old advertising signs—ranging from Hovis bread to Woodbine cigarettes—just to spend time with her.

Branson accompanied his tribute with a photo of the couple:

They married in 1989 on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. Throughout their marriage, Branson frequently cited Templeman as his moral and emotional anchor, noting that she was a private individual who supported him spiritually and emotionally away from the public eye.

She was the most wonderful mother and grandmother our children and grandchildren could have wished for. She was my best friend, my rock, my guide, my world.

Family and Legacy

The couple shared three children: Holly, Sam, and Sarah Clare. The family has previously spoken about the tragedy of losing Sarah Clare, who died shortly after birth in 1979.

Following the announcement, their son Sam Branson also shared a tribute, describing his mother as the warmest and most generous woman he had ever known.

I am so grateful for the privilege of being your son and calling you mum.

Templeman serves as a central figure in the history of the Virgin brand family, having stood by Branson during the expansion of his ventures, including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Galactic, and Virgin Orbit. The family has requested privacy as they navigate this period of mourning.
