A major fire at a refrigeration facility in Buin, Chile, triggered a significant emergency response as authorities worked to contain a chemical hazard and evacuate nearby residents. The incident, which occurred on May 30, 2026, involved approximately 17,000 liters of ammonia stored on-site, prompting fears of environmental and public health risks.
The blaze, reported in the early hours of Friday, affected the Friofort refrigeration plant located at Avenida Alcalde Krumm and Ruta 5 Sur. Local firefighters from multiple municipalities, including Buin, Ñuñoa, and Melipilla, rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent residential areas. Authorities ordered the evacuation of around 100 residents from the nearby Villa El Olivar neighborhood, urging them to stay indoors and use masks to mitigate exposure to potential chemical fumes.
“In the first instance, the personnel focused on cooling the tank [containing ammonia] and then cutting off the spread to the village that was evacuated,” said Manuel Acevedo, the head of Buin Firefighters.
The situation remained under control throughout the night, with no reported injuries among residents or emergency responders. However, one local was hospitalized after experiencing a panic attack during the evacuation. The delegate presidencial metropolitano, Germán Codina, confirmed that the chemical threat was contained but emphasized that firefighting efforts would continue into the early hours of Saturday.
Emergency officials highlighted the complexity of managing the incident due to the presence of hazardous materials. Ammonia, a common refrigerant, can pose severe health risks if released in large quantities, including respiratory distress and environmental contamination.
